* Thessaloniki (or Salonica) is situated in the north east of Greece, in Central Macedonia, at the end of the Thermaic Gulf. With a population of around 350,000, it is the second biggest city in the country after the capital Athens. Thessaloniki is also the second biggest political, financial and trade centre in Greece and is a major transport hub for countries in South-East Europe. Its commercial port is, therefore, developing a major activity both for the country and for the hinterland of South-East Europe. The city is also known for its festivals and cultural events, and is considered Greece’s capital of culture. Thessaloniki was founded by Cassander of Macedonia in -315 and was named in honour of his wife, to whom he offered the city as a mark of his love.
